Book Club :: Mindy Kaling's, Why Not Me? Part Four - All the Opinions You Will Ever Need

Today we're delving into the final section of Mindy Kaling's second novel, Why Not Me? This part is all of her opinions on life, advice, and worries. As in previous parts, I really identified with her honesty and how she doesn't hold back when answering questions. I appreciate that kind of refreshing energy.

Question Time

Unlikely Leading Lady::

+ I like how Kaling says, "Wait, I don't want to be real." In my opinion, that term has lost its authenticity and can almost be said in a negative way. What do you think?

+ I laughed at her depiction of what's usually on her mind. Mine would include: Jennifer Lawrence, Where's My Wine?, How Many People Visited the Blog?, and My Dog is So Cute. What would yours look like?

+Just to serve as an important reminder. Page 202: "If you've got it, flaunt it. And if you don't got it? Flaunt it. 'Cause what are we even doing here if we're not flaunting it?"

Harvard Law School Class Day Speech::

+ The whole bit about Noah Feldman had me chuckling. Was there someone in your graduating class (or any class for that matter) who everyone knew regardless of whether they actually knew them or not?

+ What advice would you give if you were speaking to a graduating class? Something that's always stuck with me is that we're a society that does a lot of speaking but not enough listening. My advice would be to listen more and talk less.

4 a.m. Worries::

+ What are some of your 4 a.m. worries? Mine include: What if I was supposed to do this by now but didn't?, Did I forget to respond to someone?, Why doesn't he like me?, Am I a big phony?

Why Not Me? ::

+ What do you think of her comment about "deserving to be confident"? I think confidence comes first; owning who you are up front and center. At the same time her opinion made sense. I wonder if her definition is similar to my definition of respect, and how someone earns respect and respect in their field, and that cannot just be spoken of but rather earned. Thoughts?

Any other ideas?

That's all of the questions I have to spark conversation for now... Hop down to the comments and give it a whirl -- no thought too big, small, unwanted (within reason), or otherwise!

Book Club :: Mindy Kaling's, Why Not Me? Part Three - Love, Dating, and Boys Who Ru(i)n the World

Today we're delving into the next section of Mindy Kaling's second novel, Why Not Me? This part is all about love, dating, and the crazy hectic space in between. Soup Snakes was my all time favorite chapter -- I had a full spectrum of emotions play out while reading. Did you relate at all to today's discussion chapters?

If you've missed any prior Book Club get-togethers, head over to Book Club and catch up! Still haven't grabbed the book? It's not too late. Promise! Buy it here.

For next Tuesday, December 22nd - let's get this book done before New Years! :: All The Opinions You Will Ever Need

Question Time

Soup Snakes::

+ Reading this gave me the feels & reminded me of how lucky I am to have a guy like B.J. in my life. Are you soup snakes with anyone?

+ What is one of the most striking memories you have with your best friend/ soul mate -- like the plane scene in this chapter?

One of the President's Men::

+ Have you ever been in a drawn out correspondence with someone you really like? How did it go? How did it end? Was it overly built up in your mind?

+ What's your date-confidence mantra? Mine is You are a sexy bada** & you are rocking this date.

A Perfectly Reasonable Request::

+ "All I want is someone reasonable who is basically a good guy" - p. 155. I love this section, because I think at some point we all just want to scream to the world our "perfectly reasonable request[s]". What are some of yours?

+ Would you rather have a partner who fit your list to a T but who you didn't love or someone who didn't fit the list at all but you loved with all of your heart?

A Perfect Courtship in My Alternate Life ::

+ This section made me laugh right out loud. I couldn't help but think of Danny from The Mindy Project. When Sam texts her after the kiss, I thought it was so spot on to some of my own texting catastrophes, I bonded with it over shame :). What was your favorite part?

+ Do you have an imagined alternate life? What are some key differences of this imagined life from your current one?

Any other thoughts?

That's all of the questions I have to spark conversation for now... Hop down to the comments and give it a whirl -- no thought too big, small, unwanted (within reason), or otherwise!

Book Club :: Mindy Kaling's, Why Not Me? Part Two - Take This Job And Love It

mindy-kaling-book-club.jpg

Today we're delving into the next section of Mindy Kaling's second novel, Why Not Me? This part is all about her career, her wanting and demanding more, and all of the questions that come with following your passions. Did you relate at all?

If you've missed any prior Book Club get-togethers, head over to Book Club and catch up! Remember, the first person to comment in our discussion gets a FREE copy of our next Book Club read. Still haven't grabbed the book? It's not too late. Promise! Buy it here.

For December 18th :: Love, Dating, And Boys Who Ru(i)n the World  - Soup Snakes is my favorite of this entire section ;)

Question Time

How to Get Your Own TV Show (and Nearly Die of Anxiety)::

+ Have you ever grown restless with or felt stuck in your job?

+ Do you think Mindy Kaling was ungrateful to wonder what more there could be for her? Or complacent if she hadn't?

Mindy Lahiri, MD, Everygirl, Mild Sociopath::

+ I thought the comparison between her and Mindy Lahiri was hilarious. Especially "see food poisoning as an opportunity to springboard into a new exercise regimen".
Did anything on those lists spark you as funny, thought provoking, or curious?

On Being a Mentor, by Greg Daniels::

+ During my senior year of high school, I spoke on the benefits of mentoring and have been fortunate to have some incredible mentors over the years.
What does being a mentor mean to you?

+ Daniels mentions having children as the main reason for becoming a mentor. For all of the Moms & Dads reading this, did you experience something similar? Are you more patient with those learning in your workplace or just life in general? Are you more willing to impart your knowledge?

I Love Sex Scenes! ::

+ I think her quote, "Sex scenes are the tits. You're welcome." just about summed up this section. It seems tv shows, advertisements, movies - and just about everywhere else - fuels the mentality that sex sells.
How do you feel about sex in the media?

+ Getting personal, what do you think it would be like to make a sex scene for a tv show or movie? I think actresses and actors are quite brave!

Coming This Fall::

+ I'm definitely guilty of watching the types of shows she describes.
How about you? Any description you liked best?

A Day in the Life of Mindy Kaling::

+ Initially, I couldn't help but be exhausted by her daily life. Then I realized she is doing what she loves (and I have very similar hours - gasp!!!).  Even when the hours are long and tough, there's something so satisfying about putting together a piece of your soul for the public.
Do you have a passion like this?

Bad Sport::

+ I'll admit I'm a closet bad sport. I'll deny it if anyone brings it up, but I do love to win. It makes me feel all glowy and strong inside.
Are you a bad sport?

+ I was in awe of how poised and in control she was during the nominations. I loved reading this section and knowing the behind-the-scenes of that moment.
What do you do when you're trying to put on a brave face?

Any other thoughts?
