Book Club: Lindy West's Shrill Pt. II

We're chatting about Lindy West's up-front honesty.

This book is doing a lot for women everywhere.

There is a fabulous article on Slate praising West as "she attacks entrenched sexism with skilled polemic". West has such an articulate voice in defending women and their choices. She unapologetically questions others who get in the way of women, and I couldn't be more happy to have her as a role model to young women and girls.

Here on The Guide, we celebrate the every woman in whatever body, lifestyle, career, or love she chooses. Reading Shrill seems to embolden us even further to draw attention to the controversies we see in our lives and then call out the unfair societal expectations that accompany them. Whether it surrounds abortion, periods, fat-shaming, love, or anything else (so everything else) women are criticized about, West has broken it down and shared her opinion.

What do you think? Do you like how strong her voice is in this work? Or do you think it's a little too forward? Let's discuss in the comments below.

For next time (August 8th), finish it up!

This Just In: The Summer Braid

Taking next-day hair to a whole new level.

There is something so perfect about braids in the summer. First of all, it means less washes and embracing dirty hair. Second, you can get the hair off your neck in an intricate design that screams laid-back chic. I used to wear braids every day in elementary school and then again when I was older for running. Now I'd like to incorporate them in an intentional way back into my style.

Below are five braids I find inspiring (and to be honest a little daunting!)...

This blog was once attributed the phrase, bohemian elegance,
so I think this boho half crown is essential.

This fierce braid. Love Kiernan Shipka, too.

+What did you think? What's your go to summer hairstyle?

How to Make Champagne Bubbly Again

Just one little thing to boost the bubbles...

Last week we talked all about champagne, and I thought I'd carry that into this week to elevate Monday. Did you know that dropping a raisin into your bottle of almost flat Champagne or Prosecco will bring it back to bubbly perfection? Apparently any carbon dioxide left in the bottle will cling to the raisin's edge and release as tiny bubbles. Now you can make that bottle of bubbly last even longer than expected. Cheers! Xx.
